What a six-week spine program actually looks like

Most people who call about back pain have already tried a few things. Here is what is different about committing to a structured program, week by week.

Movement assessment during a first visit at ATRIUM Acupuncture, Scottsdale

When someone asks me whether acupuncture can help their back, my honest answer is usually "probably, but one visit will not tell us much." Back and neck pain that has been around for months has usually recruited the muscles, the nervous system and your habits along the way. Untangling that takes a plan, not a single appointment. That is why the Spine Care Program at ATRIUM runs six to eight weeks, and why it starts with a 90-minute spine assessment.

Before you book: an optional quiz

You can book the spine assessment directly. If you would like my read first, the Spine Care quiz is a short online form. It asks what hurts, what it stops you from doing, what you have already tried, and what you want back. The health questions are optional. I read every submission myself.

The point is not to diagnose you from a form. It is to help you decide whether this program might fit. Some people need imaging or a referral first. Some have a problem that a shorter course of care will handle. I will tell you either way.

Visit one: ninety minutes

The first appointment is long on purpose. It has three parts:

  • A full health review. Your history, prior treatment, medications, sleep, work, training. The things that explain why your back behaves the way it does.
  • A movement assessment. I watch how you bend, twist, sit and stand, and where the body compensates. This is where most of the useful information comes from.
  • A first treatment. You do not leave with only a plan. You leave having been treated, so you know what the sessions feel like.

At the end I explain what I found, in plain language, and what the next six to eight weeks could look like. Sometimes the full picture takes more than one visit, and I will tell you that. If I do not think I can help, I say so.

Weeks one through eight

Treatment visits combine a few tools, chosen for what your assessment showed:

  • Acupuncture, placed around the spine and in the muscles that are overworking to protect it.
  • Electroacupuncture, a gentle, steady electrical pulse delivered through the needles. It feels like a light tapping.
  • Precise, tissue-specific deep-tissue bodywork on the muscles and soft tissues my assessment points to, at a pressure you can tolerate.
  • Guided stretches and exercises you do at home. This is the part people skip, and it is the part that keeps results.

Frequency is highest at the start, when we are trying to change the pattern, and tapers as you improve.

What gets measured

Pain scores are useful but they bounce around with sleep and stress. So we also track function, in your terms:

  • How long you can sit before you need to move.
  • How far you can walk comfortably.
  • Whether you sleep through the night.
  • The one activity you told me you want back, whether that is lifting your kid, a round of golf, or a full day at a desk.

We check these every visit. If the numbers are not moving, the plan changes. That is the advantage of a program over a series of unconnected appointments: there is a baseline, and there is accountability on my side.

Who it is for, and who it is not for

The program fits people with persistent neck, back or joint pain who are willing to do the home work and show up consistently for six to eight weeks. It is not a fit for anyone with red-flag symptoms, which need a medical evaluation first: new bladder or bowel problems, numbness in the groin, weakness in both legs, chest pain, or pain after a serious accident. If any of those apply to you, please go to urgent care or the emergency department rather than filling out a form.

Cost, stated plainly. The spine assessment is $550. The full program is $8K total, self-pay. Your $550 initial visit is credited toward the $8K total program price when you enroll within 14 days. ATRIUM is in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) only, subject to your eligibility and benefits, and the program itself is self-pay.

If you have been managing your back around your life for a while, the spine assessment is the place to start. I will tell you honestly whether the program is the right next step.
