When headaches keep taking over your calendar

A clearer headache pattern helps us decide whether acupuncture belongs in your prevention plan.

A headache has terrible timing. It does not check whether you have a presentation, a school pickup or dinner plans. When headaches keep returning, the goal is more than getting through the next one. We want to understand the pattern and reduce how much of your life it takes.

First, which kind of headache?

Migraine, tension-type headache and headaches related to other conditions are not interchangeable. Neck tension can accompany a headache without being its only cause. I ask about the location, frequency, duration, nausea, light sensitivity, medications and any changes in the usual pattern.

A simple diary can help: headache days, how long they last, what you took and what you missed. You do not need a spreadsheet worthy of a research department. A few notes in your phone are a useful start.

What acupuncture research can tell us

In a 2020 randomized trial, manual acupuncture reduced migraine days and attacks more than sham acupuncture or usual care in people with episodic migraine without aura. The study involved a course of treatment, not a single rescue visit. [1]

That supports discussing acupuncture as a preventive option for some people with migraine. It does not establish the same benefit for every headache type, and it does not replace a diagnosis or a plan for an acute migraine attack.

How I approach a first visit

I look at the headache history alongside your sleep, work setup, movement and any relevant muscle tension. If acupuncture is appropriate, we agree on practical goals and a point to reassess. Depending on the findings, hands-on care for selected neck or shoulder muscles may be included.

Useful progress could mean fewer headache days, less interruption or less reliance on rescue medication under your prescriber's guidance. Do not stop prescribed medication simply because you start acupuncture.

Give the basics a fair chance

Regular meals, adequate fluids, a consistent sleep routine and a clear medication plan are worth reviewing. Triggers vary, and endlessly eliminating foods can become another source of stress. Look for a repeatable pattern before declaring every enjoyable thing a suspect.

If you need headache medicine frequently, discuss that with your medical clinician. Some medicines can contribute to medication-overuse headache when taken too often.

Know when the plan changes

A sudden, extremely severe headache, new weakness or confusion, headache with fever and a stiff neck, or a new severe headache during pregnancy or after delivery needs urgent medical assessment. A new or substantially different pattern also deserves evaluation.

For a familiar, medically evaluated pattern, acupuncture may be one part of a more useful prevention plan. Bring your headache notes and medication list, and we can start with the details that matter.
